Should you accept the first house offered to you?

Hi, it’s Catmad. In school we’ve also been looking at Social Housing. We were writing a balanced argument on a chosen question. I chose the one above. What I thought was that although it could hold people up being choosy, you may have a NEED not a WANT. Gandhi once quoted ‘The world had enough for everyone’s need, but not enough for everyone’s greed’. I think that is the biggest problem with Social Housing. If you have a NEED you have a right to have that NEED fulfilled. What do you think, considering all the points?

  1. Well done, Catmad! Well done for posing this question to all BNC memebers and for using a really relevant quote to support your point of view. Great reasoning shown!
The discussion that follows this post has the potential to show the storytelling skill. So, what do BNC members think about needs and wants?

I think if you NEED social housing, you should be given it but if you WANT social housing for reasons other than sickness, homeless, Under 18’s or You’re being paid less money then you should not be given social housing.

Furthermore, if you WANT social house without NEEDING it then the government shouldn’t be giving it to you.

@blackmagic13 I think that if you NEED a social housing and you have an illness, underage, disabled somehow, without job and having no way of getting one or homeless then a house should be given to you without delay but if it is non of the above are connected to you then there are several thousands of other people in need of a house with a greater need than you.
In conclusion, I agree with Knighthunter24 when saying that if you WANT social housing without NEEDING it then the government should not be giving it to you.

    • This is an interesting comment, @blackmagic13, thank you. I’d like you to be curious and research what is happening in another EU country in regards to social housing. That is a broad question but it could be interesting to look at where people are living INSTEAD of social housing. If you find that an interesting topic, it would make a great post!

You shouldn’t be picky when you are trying to buy a house . Take the house that is at least 2 bedroom because other people even want a smaller house.

Good point. However I think that it depends. What if you`re elderly and the council gives you the top property in a block of flats? You shouldn’t be able to choose unless you`re in need of a certain property.

-F+ireball storm here , I think it matters on what your needs are . If you have a important need like health or cost it can affect your choice . If it is less important like community or type of house it won’t affect your choice as much as the others would .

  8. Great suggestions BNC! Can you give me reasons why people “shouldn’t be picky”? You’ve given good reasons why people should be (for example due to health reasons). So can you be open minded and think of the other side of the argument? Olivia

This is a great question! People should be thankful for their houses, However if someone is given a house and they like it they just don’t like the community around it, they DO NOT have to accept the offer! Even though they should be thankful that they are being offered a house if they don’t like the community then they could be trapping themselves in their house just so they are safe from the community. This is a huge issue!

Our group has mixed feelings. On the one hand we think that you should take what you are given so that you have somewhere straight away. On the other hand if the options offered are not meeting your needs then it may be better to wait.

That’s a good idea. What points are there for against being picky or for it? Should everyone be picky? Are we all entitled to what we want/need? What do you think?

You should accept the first house given to you because if they offered you a different house and its not the size you need so say your a family of 5 and you get given a four bedroom house its better than a one bedroom house.
    Do You Agree?

think you should and shouldn’t. i think you should because it’s not everyday you get given a house so don’t be rude, be grateful. Maybe you should’t because the area might not be safe or the house might not be sturdy

That is right if you do have a need the need needs to be fulfilled otherwise it will start to be a big problem.

No, I think you should be able to have your needs met. If it’s not perfect for you, then why should you just settle for second best. On the other hand, you have to remember that while you are entitled to have your needs fulfilled you shouldn’t say a want is a need. Many people get confused with needs and wants. Wants are not needs. Needs are not wants.

True he did say that but some wants are nearly needs so you may mean that the really big nag like wanting a golden statue. Though some (not that one) are important.
