BNC Awards - Exciting news!

Awards-heading.jpg

The Burnet News Club awards take place at Buckingham Palace at the end of the year. We'll be letting your teachers know who has been nominated VERY soon.

Who's invited?

  • Representatives from TEN schools who are shortlisted for the overall BNC award
  • TEN outstanding students
  • The teachers nominated for BNC Teacher of the Year

How do people get chosen?

  • Leaderboards: we'll check out the leaderboards - but that's not all that counts!
  • Progress: we'll read comments and posts to see who has developed their skills
  • Sessions: we'll consider the sessions we've visited and reports from teachers
  • Above and beyond: we'll think about clubs or students who have used their BNC skills and confidence outside of the classroom.

GOOD LUCK!

You can help us out too! You can suggest why your teacher should win an award or tell us about a student whose work you always enjoy reading. They must be at a different school to you. Write your reasons below. Thanks!

I truly think that my BNC teacher should win an award because she is always trying her best to help us get a good understanding of the issue/the work of each session. Another reason why I nominate my teacher is that she is always trying her hardest to get us all to improve on the 5BNC skills and she never lets us down. My teacher is also a good nominee because she is a woman who you can just look at and get inspired. I am not saying all these facts just because I want my teacher to get an award I am saying these because all of our group truly believes that she is a fantastic role model and that she is always there to help us understand the true meaning of the topics. I hope after hearing some of the great things about my teacher you give her an award.

I think my BNC teacher Erica should be nominated again for an award because she always improves are 5 skills and always challenges us to make us think for a different point of view or to develop our reasoning. If we are unsure about something or a bit confused about how something happens she tries to give examples that she has been through. Erica is always positive and never lets a negative topic get to negative and always stays on the positive side of things. If the group all agrees on something she tells us a situation which may change our minds and make us to think harder. Overall she is a friendly, happy and joyful teacher and therefore Erica should win an award.

My BNC teacher should get an award because like hopeful_saxophone said she's a very influential person. Furthermore, even when we are not doing BNC sessions she still makes sure that we use the skills ,for example English lessons. Also, she gives everyone a chance to express their opinions and ,if she does have her own views on the issue, she will still take into account what we have said. She helps us at expressing our opinions in a very clear way, instead of just waffling. When we first started, she said we are very "excitable" and that "we talk a lot" ( especially on BNC live ). When I think about it now, I agree. However, she was able to turn that excitability into well informed opinions, using the skills. I think that this is a very important quality of a BNC teacher. She understands how BNC works and what to do in sessions; she puts her own spin on things as well though, which makes sessions a lot more fun. Whatever situation that we're in, she finds a way to make it work. Sometimes she even finds a way to do two sessions in the same hour. Now that you've read this I hope you choose Miss Baker to get an award. :)

I think my teacher should be chosen because I think she is one of the most inspiring teachers that I know. She has been very supportive in all the different views that we think. And she always tries her best to make us be the best we can be. I have certainly gained more confidence from her. She also lets everyone express their point of veiw and would not let anyone be unheard. Now that you have heard about her, I hope you chose her to get the award.

I think that our BNC teacher (Mr Baker) should win an award. This is because he hasn’t led the club in a typical English teacher way. He has made the club something I, and my fellow FCC BNC members look forward to each and every week. The only drawback is his occasional terrible, terrible, downright criminal cringe-worthy jokes he comes up with on occasion.
At FCC the BNC is a completely optional after school club. If Mr Baker didn’t lead the club with such enthusiasm and lead our sessions in such an interesting and engaging way then I am sure that many of us would much rather be at home, watching the TV or playing on our phones than having to stay in school for an extra hour.
Not only does he help us develop our skills in the BNC, but he encourages us to use and apply these skills outside the club too. This year many of us have taken part in activities like youth speaks (a public speaking competition where we wrote and performed our own speeches in front of an audience, many of them being complete strangers) and talking at our local peace group (Faringdon peace group) about our views on conflict (we talked about our opinions on climate change and self harm). I love talking to other students on the hub, but having these opportunities to share and present my views in front of complete strangers face-to-face was great and a good experience which has helped mine, and many of my friend’s confidence to grow massively. This is again something which would not be possible without the hard-work of Mr Baker to help organise and support us in these events.
Mr Baker also goes out of his way to invite guests like Bjorn (who was extremely knowledgeable and taught us a lot on the topic of Myanmar and the Rohingya refugee crisis) and, more recently, Ed Vaisey (the local MP for our constituency) which helps us to further our understanding of topics as well as being able to have our questions answered.
This year my interest in the news, enjoyment of writing and formulation and confidence in voicing my opinions has massively improved. This is something that I am sure most, if not all of the Faringdon BNC group would see in themselves too. I know that this is largely thanks to the great content that the team at the BNC provides, but I feel that without Mr Baker leading the sessions in the interesting, engaging and funny way he does I doubt that I would have developed these skills or enjoyed doing so anywhere near as much.
My final reason would be that he listens to us and I feel like he really respects all our opinions. I feel like often teachers can speak down to us, or discount our opinions purely based on our age but he not only listens; he inputs, debates and shares his opinion too. I feel like he is genuinely interested in what we have to say and challenges us to justify something where we haven’t very well. He encourages us to do our best, pushes us and helps us to develop the confidence and skills to be the best journalists, writers, debaters and students we can be.

So that is why I think Mr Baker should be nominated or even win an award. I hope that you take what I have said into consideration when you make your decision because of the reasons I have given: because of his enthusiasm every single week, the way he makes the BNC something I actively look forward to and incredibly enjoy, the extra effort he goes to to help us meet new, knowledgeable people, his support in helping us to apply the BNC skills outside of the club and the way he listens to our opinions and challenges and helps us to produce our best possible writing.

I think my teacher should be nominated because she explains the lesson properly, never forgetting anything. She always encourages us by her smiling at us so it only means she wants us to understand more and be happy as well. Especially she gives us a "thing" (it's not really a thing, it's a surprise, though she might forget it but I don't mind and don't ask about it because I know it's rude. I never tell anyone what it is on the BNC as well so nothing bad happens in my way.) She also tells us exciting news on the BNC and I'm always listening with ears open because there are lots on the Hub and it's fun to know. And when we tell her exciting stuff that happened on the Hub to us and in three seconds there is a smile spreading on her face from ear to ear. She also is very kind and jolly

Please consider Miss Baker for the award! Hopeful_saxophone and balanced_singer are both correct, she is an inspirational teacher and passionate about what she does. She has been truly amazing to get us all thinking about the current issues at a much deeper level by utilising all the 5 BNC skills. Sometimes she had to cram two sessions into one because our lessons can fall on Bank Holidays, but I still feel we come out of the sessions learning a lot. Miss Baker always utilises BNC skills into her other lessons so I never feel like we’ve missed a week! The session is always fun because her unique and relaxed teaching style makes it incredibly enjoyable which in my opinion is the best way to learn. I for one wasn’t the most confident from the start, but Miss Baker is really patient and really encourages you to express yourselves in a coherent way and we can see the confidence growing in everybody even for the quieter ones amongst us. And so this is why we have all praised Miss Baker as an inspirational teacher!

And whilst I’m here, I would also like to say that every BNC member has been amazing because every little comment can add to my own perspective on every issue. When I first started doing this, unsure about it all, beloved_chocolate and fantastic_duck were two of the many I looked up to because they both write with a lot of passion and their post are well thought out. Content_lemon is brilliant too because she writes from the heart. I particularly love the fact that we have international students joining in the discussions and I have learned a lot from hearing about things from their perspectives.

My Burnet News Club teacher (Mr Graham) is very good at explaining things, teaching, and being a great teacher. He makes not only the burnet news club issues exciting, but everything else we do is always fun. He gives us time to think and discuss, and values every-ones opinion. I am 100% sure that everyone else in the whole school of St Gregory's would appreciate if he gets chosen, as he always try's his best, and although this is his first year at our school, he has been a very good teacher. 👍😊

From my point of view, my teacher is the best teacher I ever met. His name is Mr Graham and I really like him because when it's time for serious he is serious but when it's time for fun he goes crazy around the whole class. If we don't understand something, Mr Graham keeps his perseverance with him and if he has to, he shows it to us by using real life and practical ways. I hope Mr Graham get's the award because in my opinion he deserves it and he is a very special teacher.

I believe that my BNC teachers (Miss Hall and Miss Barten) should be nominated the award. This is because they have started the club at this school just this year. They have been amazing at explaining the situations and have always given us the opportunity to form our own opinions instead of trying to give us theirs. Every week, they have been at the club and never fail to make us smile with their witty ( if sometimes slightly dark) humour. In addition, they take extra time out of their schedules to help us to write comments and posts. Since starting the club, I have become more confident with stating my opinions and have joined a debating society. I firmly believe this is because of how kind they were and did not scoff at what we said. Over the course of the year, the whole of my club have posted and commented more on the hub and this is because of the encouragement given to us by them. Therefore, I believe that Miss Hall and Miss Barten should get the award.

I believe that our BNC teachers ( Mrs Pyne and Mrs Allen) should be nominated for this award. I believe this because they not only make our learning fun but encourage us to try our best for stars. They help us write our posts if we wish, but they don’t do it all for us. It’s all our ideas, which I believe is good, because they help us, but make it all our thinking. They help us -and never fail at- making our BNC lessons fun and entertaining. I -and most of my class would agree- that BNC is great because of our teachers!

I hope that this has inspired you to nominate my teachers for the award!

In my opinion, I believe that our BNC teacher (Leanne Evans) should be nominated the award. The reason is not because she our BNC teacher, it is because she is able to take her job seriously as well as at the same time making it enjoyable and fun. Ever since I started the burnet news club there has never been a time when she hasn't allowed us to share our opinions or say that our opinion is wrong. One of her many talents is being able to correct us in a calm way if we get confused. If she sees that a student is not contributing as well as they could she encourages them to speak out and allows everyone's opinion to be heard and listened to by the rest of the class. She also makes sure that we take the club seriously and invigorates us to use the time we are given wisely. She has the ability to solve the few disagreements that rarely happen in the sessions. A lot of us have upgraded our level of confidence, reasoning and many more skills because of all the encouragement she gives to us. At the end of every session she motivates us all to enter weekly competitions and to write posts and comments. If we ever miss a session for one reason or the other, she always makes sure that we can catch up with activity and get on with the next one. That is why I would love it if my BNC teacher would receive the award.

I appraise our BNC teachers (Mrs Pyne and Mrs Allen ) should recommend this award. I think this because even though they make out lessons amazing but they uplift us about trying our best to get stars. They both help us think of ideas for our posts and comments but we think of the ideas and they right them down. They always try their best to make our BNC lessons fun and enjoyable.
Me and most of my class would agree to nominate theese people to get the award.

I think that the whole of the Boutcher school BNC staff should win the award for of their dedication to Burnet News Club. They have been patient and open-minded, have heard everyone, even those who have opinions they don't agree with, been fair and inclusive and haven't stopped working with us until we feel confident to share our opinions with others. We have three teachers who have worked so hard this year to help us on BNC. We have a different teacher every term, and they have all contributed to my knowledge and live of BNC. Without them, I would be never got so involved, heard or open-minded in and out of BNC sessions. Thank you Boutcher school teachers!!!

I agree with @impartial_panda_bear. Ms. Clifford, Mrs. Whitton and Mr. Avis have all been incredibly helpful in ALL our BNC sessions; making sure we have one each week, asking us deeper questions to make us think (e.g. "What makes you think that?" or "But what about this?" etc.) and lots more. All 3 of our teachers help us all, and I think that their hard work and effort to help us understand and do well should be recognised. They have made sure we look into and taking into account reasons for other people's opinions; therefore being open-minded, used examples from their own private life, and just generally been a good sport! Honestly - without these 3 teachers, we wouldn't currently be in 1st place on the leaderboard; in fact, without their excellent explanations, I doubt I would have this many stars to be on the leaderboard!
All in all, they are very deserving of this nomination (and impartial_panda_bear's), I think that they have been a huge help in everyone's understanding, and they should definitely win the award for Burnet News Club Teacher(s perhaps?) of the Year not only for their dedication and help, but for their kindness and understanding.

I think that my teacher should be nominated because she always wants us to make sure that we are engaged in a lesson because she believes children can change things and are able to understand what is going on in our world if you listen and have a good teacher. I also want to select my teacher because she is consistently encouraging us to make a comment; write a post and use all the skills variously. I would also pick my teacher as she is always being supportive and wants to help us in lessons and she always puts burnet news club first. If there is a problem that we can not do BNC then she will always try to fit it in on the same week and do as much as possible. Therefore I would choose my teacher.

I think the teacher who should be chosen is Frances, she is the Pupil Voice Lead and she is my teacher in the burnet news club. She should get chosen because I think she is one of the most inspiring teachers that I know. She has been very supportive of all the different views that we think. And she always tries her best to make us be the best we can be. I have certainly gained more confidence from her. She also lets everyone express their point of view and would not let anyone be unheard. Also, I think my teacher should get the BNC award because she respects everyone's voice and everyone's right. Furthermore, she encourages school council, burnet news club and pupils to get out there, be resilient and love learning. We had shot a video in our school to explain what a rights-respecting school is. Without Frances, I would not be the person I am and I would not know my rights. She taught to embrace life and to love and to live. No matter what obstacle you face get back up again and fight on. I owe many thanks to this teacher and I hope she gets the award!
