Violent Crime-Week 1, Part one

FeaturedImage_Crime_5.jpg

This post will be focusing on what we learnt on the first week of this new topic. Including my answer would be for a few questions that were asked. I have no doubt that most of you were at BNC, so you'd probably know, we started off with matching a few words to their definitions. I have looked at them and written, using my own words, their definition. (though you might see a few words that were used in the BNC definitions):

Crime: Actions that you do which are against the law and could have consequences.

Violent Crime: A crime in which someone is threatened or hurt physically this includes the use of weapons.

Knife Crime: This could be either carrying a knife or injuring people with a knife.

Gang: A group of people which join together and are violent and commit crimes e.g. knife crime.

The Media: The news! Whether it's radio, TV or maybe even things like Facebook etc. they're ALL the media.

Justice: Your fair consequence, it doesn't always have to be for crimes but most people know how justice is served in court.

We had the same words (Crime, Justcice etc.) with other words which you had to see what they'd go with. To make it easier for you I got a picture for you to see what I was talking about. Here's what I think words should go to and after I'll write why. You'll see that most words are written more than once, it will be explained shortly.

Crime: Sadness, Revenge, Fear, Pity, Scary, Angry, Wrong.

Violent Crime: Sadness, Revenge, Fear, Pity, Dangerous, Scary, Angry, Wrong.

Justice: Right, Forgiveness, Fairness, Fear, Scary, Punishment.

Gang: Family, Revenge, Fear, Pity, Dangerous, Scary, Belonging, Angry, Wrong.

The Media: Right, Trust, Desperate, Misleading.

Knife Crime: Sadness, Revenge, Fear, Pity, Scary, Dangerous, Scary, Angry, Wrong

Let's start with the repeated words... I've repeated Sadness as people who've had crimes done to them or people close to them are usually sad. So I've put sadness on all the crimes. Revenge is repeated as there is always a chance that the crime was committed for revenge. So again, I've put it on the crimes-including gangs as gang members might also choose their targets due to revenge. I've repeated Fear as people might be scared things will happen to them. Gangs might be intimidating and I've put fear with justice for the fear of going to jail. Pity is repeated as people would feel sorry for the targets. Dangerous is repeated on all the violent crimes as obviously they are the most dangerous. It's on Gang as they are usually dangerous. Scary is basically a synonym for fear. Anger might be the reason the crimes are committed. Finally, Wrong is there as the crimes are simply WRONG.

For the non-repeated words, so mainly the Justice and the Media sections. There is one for the Gang section before we go start Justice. I've put Family on Gang as some members would consider each other as family. I've put Right on Justice as to be 'just' you need to be right. Forgiveness is on Justice as you forgive the people who did the crimes and ended up in jail. Fairness would be a synonym for right. Punishment would be going to jail. Going on to Media, there's right as a few people would think the Media is correct ('right' is repeated but only twice). The people who think the Media is correct would Trust the Media. It is Desperate for information like the latest news. It could be Misleading because not everything is necessarily true.

This is part one as I have much more to write which will be put on a different post. If you're struggling on what to comment on, I have an idea for you.

You may have noticed I didn't use the word Courage, so I have a question. If you used courage in which section would you put it in and why? I'm excited to hear everyone's comments.

I really enjoyed reading this post energetic_conversation,

We love to hear what discussions and activities you've been doing in your BNC class sessions.

I've awarded you a star as you've shown good storytelling. You've clearly communicated what you did in the task and you've explained a lot about language choice.

I find it interesting that you picked both 'trust' and 'misleading' for 'the media'. These seem like opposites. Should we trust the media?

If I used 'courage' I would probably put it with 'justice'. Sometimes it takes a lot of courage from people to make sure that justice happens. For example, someone coming forward with information about a crime.

To answer your question, I think the word 'courage' will go into justice. It takes plenty of courage to stand up for what's right. You might have a different opinion to me and I would like to hear!

I think that courage might just go to Gangs as well. Rather than a gang to do simple things, they would do whatever they want even if they ended up getting arrested. They have courage to do this.
I would love to here if you have any different opinions!

I think this because the people lives who they destroyed should be punished and they should get a medicine of what they did to other people

I don’t think the police uses weapons for crime, they use it to protect the victims and the people around the area.

In my opinion, I believe that the media should and should not be trusted. Firstly, the media is made from many types of ways that the news is presented such as:

    1) Newspapers

    2) Online newspapers

    3) Social media

    4) Television broadcasts

    5) Radios

In terms of newspapers, I believe that the majority of information and statistics in the majority of newspapers are true. As it may be, there have been fake news in a minority of the newspapers, which have been publishing untrue news to the public. This excites or disheartens the public. This makes them either crestfallen or hopeful. After, the public who are reading the newspapers, realise that the news that they are hearing about is fake. Different newspapers, however tell different views of the news, different stories of the news and different news about that they believe that people will be interested in.

Other than Online newspapers and Social media (where the reporter can be anonymous), television broadcasts and radios are as believable, legitimate and as trustworthy as newspapers nevertheless, they are:

    • presented in different ways

    • are used with different technological devices

    • are in different places

These are presented in different ways since newspapers are writing in paper about the current affair, a television broadcast is when the news reporters say what is happening around the world, online newspapers either have the news that is typed or is a video. In radios, the presenter usually has a debate and a discussion with experienced people of the issue, who are involved in it and normal citizens of the country, which it is happening to.

These are used with different technological devices because television broadcasts are often on the television or on a computer, news in radios is on the radio and online newspapers are on computers, phones and even I-pads. These are in different places for the reason that television broadcasts are at home or in a public building, radios are usually at home or in the car and online newspapers are on computers at home or any television in public places.

Social media and online news, despite being a news source as well, is different to newspapers, radios and television broadcasts for Social media news and opinions on news stories can be legitimate but untrustworthy news.

In terms of statistics and news, Social media can be deceptive as the news that they talk about can often be exaggerated by people such as violent crime and headlines of it that claims that a boy was stabbed in thirty seconds. Because some Social media has fake news, people can use reliable news sources such as SKY news, BBC news, Al Jazeera, The Times and the Guardian.

In terms of opinions, perspectives and views on news stories, I believe that Social media has many unique view points over a wide range of topics currently on the news. However, the view points being shared can make you change your mind on what is happening and educate you more about the news. If you are in a group in Social media and everyone has the same views as each other, then it pressurises you and makes you want to believe the same opinion as well.
