I mean, we have that right, but we really should be careful with what we say. We shouldn’t feel restricted, but if what we have to say isn’t nice, we really just shouldn’t say it at all. I think that having the right to freedom of speech shouldn’t restrict us but its just us ourselves that have to be careful.

    • I think this week’s expert contributor has got lots of interesting things to say about this, and a really good example of freedom of speech being restricted on television. You can read more here: https://www.burnetnewsclub.com/jamesrodgers-2/

I agree.I think That it is extraordinarily important that as individuals, we all have the right of freedom of speech, so that we can be ourselves and move out of our comfort zone. I feel very lucky and grateful to live in a democratic country where all opinions are listened to and respected, but other countries such as China
or North Korea are punished if they do not vote for a certain candidate, or their votes are tampered with afterwards. Other countries still have very strong hate towards homosexuals, lesbians, bisexuals, transgenders and gay people expressing themselves. I wish we could give every each and every country this right, as i feel very strongly about it.
Overall, I believe that right to freedom of speech is so important, and does not restrict us at all.
      Thank you

      • Hi Yellowdinosaur0905, this is a really passionate comment and shows good use of reasoning. Do you think there are ever times when it is NOT acceptable for people to express their opinions? Can you think of time when, perhaps in the UK, freedom of speech is restricted? Some examples here would be great. Well done! Olivia

Thank you for posting that- It made me think of it now at a different angle- maybe sometimes people should definitely keep negative remarks to themselves. Sometimes people can say negative things in public, without even realizing who they could be offending!
The one Time I can think of, where I think freedom of speech is highly restricted is on ( especially reality) TV shows, Where people may feel restricted or maybe pressured to say something that they are only saying in order for somebody to think certain things about them/ in order to please the people who may be watching the television.
I think that strong arguments could be made on either side of the debate, but most of all, I think that everyone should feel free to say what they think unless it would hurt anyone’s feelings, and that we should all try and think more about what we’re going to say before actually saying it.
          Thank you!

I believe that if we don’t have the freedom of speech, we can’t be ourselves and express how we feel about what’s going on in the world. Unfortunately there are some places in the world(such as Russia) people are punished for voicing their opinion just because it goes against what the government says.

If we dont have freedom of speech then we cant show our true personality with the world and we would be locked up inside ourselves for no-one knows how long

We have freedom of speech and Russia don’t so this mean’s that we can express our opinions and they can’t. This is unfair

Having the freedom to say anything you want is great. You get to express yourself through words and opinions. You can make someone happy by just talking to them. However, freedom of speech can be used as a negative thing. Saying bad things can hurt many people’s feelings. Sometimes you can say something without realising that you have hurt someone. What I’m trying to say is that people should think before they speak.

    • This is a great point Echantress. Can you give any examples where people should think before they speak? And do you think it’s always right to NOT say something just because it might hurt someone’s feelings? Can you think of any examples that contradict this? I look forward to your reply! Olivia

  8. In my opinion, people should have the right to have the freedom of speech because without it people can’t express themselves and how they feel about people’s opinions or what is happening in other countries. However, some countries don’t allow this (such as Russia;North Korea;Iran and many more) if people do have a freedom of speech then they will be punished because they think that it will go against what the government says and thinks.

How can the government know what you are saying if you are in your own house? Is there a way they can hear you all the time without invading your privacy?

Freedom of speech is important but only in a safe way instead of swaring and saying bad words

    My Opinion:
Well, of course in Russia freedom of speech is restricted. Although, in the UK just because we are allowed to state our opinions and have Freedom of Speech doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be careful with what we say. Furthermore, if we don’t have anything cordial or encouraging to state, then maybe we shouldn’t speak at all.

It might as well be restricted because, on social media apps such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and many others, people are using abusive words, that should stop because it could start leading to fights which, I’m sure nobody wants to happen.

Then again, it shouldn’t be restricted because everybody should be allowed to say what is on their head, and give their opinions about what they think, and what they want to happen.

I think that we should all have the right to freedom of speech but you cant be restricted but you should think before you speak because if someone says there opinion but you say no your all wrong and say your opinion that may be your opinion but you should just say polity well hats a valued point but i think and say whatever your opinion may be.

No I don’t think it does restrict us because it it allows us to share our views, but we need to be careful about how we use our right. So we shouldn’t use it as an excuse for making hurtful comments or prejudicial comments.
