Migration and the refugee crisis

We’re really excited about the first Burnet News Club issue of the year: Migration and the refugee crisis. This is an extremely important issue in the news and we can’t wait for you to share your first thoughts on it here on the blog.

Click here to find out about the issue.

What is your initial opinion? Let us know by commenting below this post, giving your answers to these questions:

  1. Should we always help people in need?
  2. Should people be able to choose to live wherever they like in the world?
  3. Should governments care more about what’s best for their own people than what’s best for people in need in other countries?
  4. If someone chooses to go and live in another country, should they live by that country’s rules and values even if they don’t agree with them?

I think that we should always help refugees even though it does encourage them to come back, they have risked their lives just to get away. Everyone deserves to have the same rights, and i feel refugees do not have the same rights we have.

I think that Tigindependence446 is right because refugees travel far just to get out of danger.

Refugees have the rights to come in to this country because the government promised to keep them safe and protect them. They have also lost homes, jobs not much money and no food.i agree

Hi TheMusicMan10, good question! Different migrants and refugees are taking different routes to reach European countries, some take trains and buses so they all walk different distances.

Many are walking huge distances and a lot of the pictures in the media are of migrants and refugees walking 110 miles from Hungary to Austria. That’s the same distance walking from Cardwell Primary School to Westcombe Park Station and back fifty times. Once they get to Austria many walk another 200 miles to reach Germany.

Same here, I think refugees have rights to live here in Europe because we all are humans and we all share the same world. Though, the part where you said that refugees have no food, you are 100% correct. They do not have much food, even in London!

Animal savannah, thank you for your comment!

An asylum seeker is similar to a refugee and this can get confusing.

Asylum seekers and refugees are both looking for a new place to live because it is not safe for them to live in their home country anymore.

An economic migrant is someone who leaves their home country because they want to find a better job.

I think that England should not let any refugees to this country because they might be racist or terrorists or even mudras because many years ago in the wold war2 many black people and disabled people were very scared so they had no chose but to leave their country

          Agreeing

I agree , because in the group of refugees fleeing conflict in Syria , are in need , but there can be terrorists coming to England and they can be anywhere across the lands especially in London.
          Disagreeing

I also disagree because England can over populate and people have to be kicked out of houses. another point is that David Camoran and Queen Elizabeth have to pay more money to build more food shops. lastly , at the end of 1 month there will be no food or water to drink or eat and what clothes will they wear?

        • Cardwell Primary School Cardwell Primary School

Tjgindependence446 , I agree with you. But I feel if people have converted from one country to another they should be able to adapt to our style. Meaning that only a certain amount of places are available to our residents. What we also have to take into consideration is people dont want the city they have been living in to now be chaotic. There is also homeless people already in England, so we have other problems to sort out.

We should allow refugees to come to our country but there should be a limit. These people are fleeing from war ;so why would they be terrorists? They are fleeing from war! If they are terrorists and the come to other countries they are basically fleeing from themselves. This may not make sense at first but it is true.

Personally, I feel that we should let refugees and migrants enter our country, but with control, as if we let too many of them England’s government will struggle to help everyone. Furthermore, the main reason for why we should let a limited amount of refugees into our country is because people are mostly travelling from places, where some people commit crimes such as: shooting planes down or just randomly killing people. Therefore, we should limit the amount of people entering our country and the English government should create some kind of x-ray vision security system to make our country a lot safer when migrants and refugees enter!

      • Lucy, from the Economist Educational Foundation Lucy, from the Economist Educational Foundation

Hi Diamond, thank you for your comment.

There are lots of reasons why a refugee might travel without a passport.

Sometimes refugees cannot get a passport from their home country, making a passport takes time. If you want to leave your country in a hurry and escape conflict but you don’t have a passport already then you might leave without one.

Another reason the refugees might not have a passport is because they have lost their belongings into the sea on a dangerous boat journey.

There has also been evidence that migrants and refugees are throwing their passports away if they are not from Syria. This is because Syrian refugees are sometimes given help first.

Can you do some research on this and let me know what you find?

Should we always help people in need?
I think that we should sometimes help people regarding the situation if they are at war then we should obviously help them because some people’s situation isn’t that serious!
Should people be able to choose to live wherever they like in the world?
I think yes and no because it is very controversial! I think no because they could all like France so all of them go to France so it would be cramped and the other countries would be empty and eery.

Germany is Europe’s top destination for people who are running away from war and misery, its Europe’s greatest migrant influx since the Second World War. Germany estimates that 30% of incoming migrants claim that their citizens of war-torn Syria.

Refugee children are frightened, homeless and many have been through unspeakable horrors. Most of them have been forced to leave families behind for significant periods of time. War has displaced half of all people in Syria.

We can help them by donating money which could provide them with food, clothes, and even a new home. But is it always good to do it? They might get really greedy then we get invaded! We have to move! We’re going to be the refugees’!

When refugees’ move to another country they should live with that country rules and value, even if they don’t like it because at least they found another country that doesn’t have war, they still get a better home.

A refugee should choose where to live if there’s space in that country, they shouldn’t if that country doesn’t have any space, there will be too much people and that will cause problems and battles again. Everyone is equal.

The governors should care for what’s best for their own people but also caring about the countries in need because pretend, they were refugees’ they would be begging, for a home and help. If they help they can finally relax but if they don’t they’re going to be stressed out for the rest of their life.

Well done club members, this has been a really interesting discussion. We’ve had over 100 comments and many different opinions and arguments being raised.

You have shown scepticism and curiosity by asking questions about how conflict plays a part in this issue.

    1. Some people think that, along with migrants and refugees, there could be people trying to enter the country from the same groups that caused the conflict the refugees are fleeing.

    2. Others are worried about conflict caused when new people move into their country. This could be because people from different countries have different values, sometimes these do not match with the values in their new country and these differences can cause conflict.

    3. There are concerns that refugees and migrants will cost people in the UK a lot of money and that we will all have to work even harder to pay for them which is not fair.

Well done for finding these arguments, I can tell you have done research into this.

We would like to know whether anyone can find evidence for these arguments by doing research and if anyone is sceptical of these arguments?

Do migrants and refugees always cause conflict?

    • North Beckton Primary School North Beckton Primary School

The migrants and refugees are not always going to argue with each other because , the migrants might let the refugees travel along with them in an enormous group , because they might be travelling by the same way and become friends . BUT these groups of people do not necessarily have to find friendship along time while travelling together , they can just blank each other , or ignore each other . There are different reasons why they can build quarrels or conflicts.

    a) I don’t think we shall let refugees come to The UK because as we let them come in they will think that we will let more and more come in. If we let one in, many family members will think that we’ll let them in too. Many people that they know would come and the chain can go on for ages. We all know that the UK isn’t a vast community, how can we get bombarded with refugees that won’t help us at all?

    b) When the refugees are travelling here, how do they eat? They must have bought all of the food, right. They got the food by PAYING! And you pay with nothing but money. I thought that they didn’t have money.

    c) I believe that they don’t know any of our rules. I wonder what they can do. They are disturbing our pupil’s education and learning.

What are the Pull and Push factors of migration?

People migrate for a number of reasons. These reasons may fall under these four areas: Environmental, Economic, Cultural and Socio-political. Within that, the reasons may also be ‘push’ or ‘pull’ factors.

    migration pointPush Factors
Push factors are those that force the individual to move voluntarily, and in many cases, they are forced because the individual risk something if they stay. Push factors may include conflict, drought, famine, or extreme religious activity.

Poor economic activity and lack of job opportunities are also strong push factors for migration. Other strong push factors include race and discriminating cultures, political intolerance and persecution of people who question the status quo.

    migration pointPull Factors
Pull factors are those factors in the destination country that attract the individual or group to leave their home. Those factors are known as place utility, which is the desirability of a place that attracts people. Better economic opportunities, more jobs, and the promise of a better life often pull people into new locations.

Sometimes individuals have ideas and perceptions about places that are not necessarily correct, but are strong pull factors for that individual. As people grow older and retire, many look for places with warm weather, peaceful and comfortable locations to spend their retirement after a lifetime of hard work and savings. Such ideal places are pull factors too.

Very often, people consider and prefer opportunities closer to their location than similar opportunities farther away. In the same vein, people often like to move to places with better cultural, political, climatic and general terrain in closer locations than locations farther away. It is rare to find people move over very long distances to settle in places that they have little knowledge of.

Well done for finding this video and thank you for sharing it with all the club members independence8! You are right, it does help clearly explain the context of this news issue. What did you find most interesting about the video? Did any of the facts in the video surprise you?

      • St Mary’s and St John’s School KS2

Well yes most of it did but the main thing I noticed was how generous Germany are to those poor refugees and just look at us! Why would David Cameron do this? Maybe he can’t imagine being the leader of them. They are desperate and he is rich. We work SO hard on OUR security and we try to build up our population while they have nowhere to live. Plus if we did help them then we would be building up our population AND be saving lives so our nation would be doing themselves a double positive!!!!!!!

Hang on… They don’t have money…. How do you go from Places like Syria to England with no money… They can’t eat with no money… They can’t travel with no money… They can’t Buy essentials with no money… And my main point is that they can’t survive with no money!

We all know that Germany think that they will let in much more refugees than us, so obviously they love letting in refugees. Why do we have have to let refugees in, Germany can?

The Syrians must know by now that Germany love letting refugees in, how comes they still making attempts to come here? The refugees won’t take a risk to come to here when they are not 100% sure that we’ll let them in and if they go to Germany, they would be let in. So, the Germans must be lying.

the refugees are travelling hundreds of miles just to get away from trouble. 300 miles. that DOESN’T give them permission to come to our country and kill 100 people. (paris terrorism) we have rights to a SAFE environment. they do not have the right to be a terrorist refugee, trying to get away from trouble to create more. unnecessary trouble foe no PARTICULAR reason

I’m not sure if the refugees are killing us , but I understand that they have tired themselves out but just give yourself a lot more time to think If I am wrong because I heard the definition of refugee is a person leaving their homes to get away from war and disturbing bombing and shooting .

I’d say that we should be causiose of who comes into the UK because what if someone who kills and who is bad and angry and shoots innocent citizens and we will have no time. intill it will be the death of us so I’m saying we should be careful reply if u think I might have a point

the refugees. yes they need rights, but not as many as you guys are suggesting. they need:

good exercise of religion and religious education,

legal access to court including assistance,

    and 5 more.

so, rethink your comments, and I suggest looking here for information:

Well the refugees should find there own cities or counteries because

      1
No no no No no no no no no…And no no no
No.No.No.No….Noooooo noooooo noooooo nope not a chance. Nope. No way. Nope. Nope. Noo. Noo.Nooo.Noo. Take care of our own, vets, elderly, anyone born in the USA. We don’t have the room, funds, housing, jobs for anyone outside the usa. No no

      and 2

. If we do allow it then we should come up with an affective background check BEFORE they buy any tickets into the states. I am honestly appalled with these issues, but it does seem slightly unfair for those many innocent immigrants that would want to come over, but cannot due to all these problems. A word to the immagrants. Stop whats going on there, its obviously not going to do you any good to sit there and not act on your problems, then no one would have these thoughts of closing the door on you.

Personally I don’t think we should let refuges into our country for the time being. I say this because of Paris Attacks. ISIS could sneak into our country as refuges so until we have either captured or befriended ISIS we should close our boarders. I say befriended because ISIS could help our army but there is a low chance they will but there is still chance.

“This AI provides guidance on the leave granted to individuals who have been granted asylum under immigration rule 334 on or after 30th August 2005 (whether the grants are made at initial decision or following an allowed appeal). This AI does not apply to individuals granted leave after having been brought to the UK under resettlement schemes.
Similar provisions have been put in place for grants of Humanitarian Protection made on or after 30th August 2005. Please see the AI on Humanitarian Protection.
The policy changes relating to refugee leave and Humanitarian Protection do not affect the Government’s commitment to upholding the UK’s obligations under the 1951 Refugee Convention and the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).
1.1 Application of this instruction in respect of children and those with children
Section 55 of the Borders, Citizenship and Immigration Act 2009 requires the UK Border Agency to carry out its existing functions in a way that takes into account the need to safeguard and promote the welfare of children in the UK. It does not impose any new functions, or override existing functions. Officers must not apply the actions set out in this instruction either to children or to those with children without having due regard to Section 55. The UK Border Agency instruction ‘Arrangements to Safeguard and Promote Children’s Welfare in the United Kingdom Border Agency’ sets out the key principles to take into account in all Agency activities.
Our statutory duty to children includes the need to demonstrate: • Fair treatment which meets the same standard a British child would receive; • The child’s interests being made a primary, although not the only consideration; • No discrimination of any kind; • Asylum applications are dealt with in a timely fashion; • Identification of those that might be at risk from harm.
It should be noted that this instruction includes guidance on dealing with individuals with special needs, defined to include minors and unaccompanied minors.
It should also be noted that this instruction offers guidance on the consideration of dependants in line with principle applicants, any consideration of which will require case owners to meet the requirements of the duty where the case involves a child or children.”

“This report details the findings of ICAR’s research into refugees’ own understandings of their rights and responsibilities in the UK. It argues that refugees manage complex responsibilities and obligations in a pragmatic and ordered way that is not inevitably in conflict with integrating into UK society. It also finds that citizenship and integration policy needs to focus equally on the rights and responsibilities of refugees to facilitate their journey to becoming full social, political and economic actors in the UK.”

(Please note: If you are worried DO NOT watch any)

The Syrians must not be fleeing their country they are bored. They must be trying to escape because of:
    -Financial Matters
    -Political Matters
    -War
    -Discrimination
-A more comfortable and less dangerous place to be in.

Imagine we are in this unfortunate state, where will you go.? Obviously you would try to get into another country.
Some people are even traveling illegally. We must protect them and make sure they aren’t caught by any type of police. I know that we have let in enough people, but we need to be better than the countries who are letting much more than us such as Germany. We need to beat them, hold a throne and be the best.

Countries are letting in more refugees everyday and that could be a disadvantage for us, but everything is possible.

    Let’s find out some more..
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clvRTmhcCkI

You see Germany are letting in grand amounts of refugees every day
We haven’t even showed good effort; UK is offering space for 200,000 refugees when Germany are offering space 1.5million.

We need to improve and become better, in MY point of view!
Please let in refugees and people who want comfort and peace

    WHY DO PEOPLE MIGRATE?
People have moved from their home countries for centuries, for all sorts of reasons. Some are drawn to new places by ‘pull ‘ factors, others find it difficult to remain where they are and migrate because of ‘push’ factors. These have contributed to the recent movement of people here but are also the reason why people from here have emigrated to other countries. Over 80 million people in the world have Irish blood; 36.5 million US residents claimed Irish ancestry in 2007. Historically some were transported or sold into slavery or left because of poverty, hunger, persecution, discrimination, civil war, unemployment and, more recently, simply for education and better jobs. Migrant numbers have risen rapidly in the last decade. In 2013 there were thought to be over 230 million international migrants.

Should we let people come from syria come to the U.K? YES OR NO.

That is the question we should ask ourselfs. Here are the reasons why.

    YES
Yess because they have no house no water no food and the only thing they have with them is children.

    NO
They should go to another city or countries because they will ask for money and some disguise themselves as migrants and it will turn into the incident that happened in France and who will save us now

    YES
If Britain are in trouble the migrants will help us because we helped them in return they can sacrifice there stuff for us.

    NO
    No because if we allow them to come them other cities, which are poor will come and some cities are Pakastan west Africa ect;

    YES
I think that we should sand up for them because if you haven’t got to know them better then how can you say that they are evil you might be evil yourself.A nd in the war Britain sood up for oher people fighting so why won’t they do it today.

    NO
If we allow them in they would change the rules and make it there own and they will hate the rules that we make

I have different opinions for the migrants and refugees. For a start they all have a reason for fleeing their country,it may be danger or it might be because they think they will have a better future here. We should let the refugees in because most of them(more than 12 million) are leaving because they are in danger if they stay in Syria. But we should be careful how many we let in.Also we still need to check them if any of them are carrying any suspicious objects. Migrants on the other hand might not be fleeing because of war, they just think the UK is a better place so we can let some in but not to many. To be honest it is hard to tell whether they are a refugee or a migrant by looking at them. Either way we will end up bringing most refugees and migrants into the UK

Having read all the comments and points, my decision on the refugee crisis is diverted because the majority of people have ASSUMED that taking in refugees will cause conflict-mostly because of what happened in Paris and in the past. But not all refugees will cause conflict, so why should all the others suffer?

However, some of you are saying that the refugees are vulnerable and we should take them in.

Both points are valid, nevertheless as I have been writing this comment I have decided that I think we should allow a LIMITED amount of refugees, starting with the highest priority to the lowest.

    1. Children (all)
    2. Families (all)
    3. Couples (half-on the condition that at least one of them is working and paying tax)
    4. Singles (half- on the condition that they are working and paying tax)

Migration and refugees have the right to come to this city but we all have our oppinons to what should happen so just let the goverment handle it and if they allow people from IS the UK then kill us then it is there problem for letting them here.
