SOCIAAL HOUSING :CHILDREN OR ELDERLY?

hello, fireball storm here,

Who do you think needs social housing more , children or elderly? Also, should the price go down for elderly or children ? By how much money ? It will be hard for someone who has a child or is pregnant as they will have to have enough money to have more space. If they were pregnant they would have to need more accessibility because they might be things like stairs they can’t walk on so they need a lift which would coast more money . The same applies for a child . The elderly might need the same but they might not be able to pay for it if they have a job with less  money or even no job. They both also need to live near a hospital for birth or if they have a heart attack .  What do you think?

I think that everyone should have a house. Social Housing is where the government gives people cheaper houses that they can afford instead of them living on the street. However, there are still many homeless people in Kent and the government aren’t being fair to those people. The government are not giving people what they need. Everyone should have a house age or no age

I agree whith you because most of the time I walk through the street and I allways see people asking for money and I feel really sad because we have homes and they don’t : purple panda

In my opinion both children and elderly deserve to have a home because elderly people need comforting since they could probably have a medical problem . Also children need a home where they are safe and loved and they both have a right to live in a home.some elderly people might need to have access to a wheelchair because they can be disabled and if someone’s a mum and they are pregnant they deserve to live in a calm healthy environment because it could do damage to the baby . So of course people who are in need like elderly and children of a home should be given one by the government no matter what .

As much as i agree with you, the government does not have enough money to be spending it all on social housing because they still have to pay for healthcare, schools and police. If they were then would all the services still be adequately equipped?

I think that children should get the social house because you wouldn’t want your child thinking that you haven’t got money to buy a house also the adult supervising them could be elderly

I agree with @KongDaSavage as more money should be put aside for schools so that children will have the knowledge for moments in life

They are both important. Children are because they are young, and need to lead a good life. Elderly are important because they cant go as long without food because they are not as strong. I think they are both important.

    • Thanks for your comment, Greencat! This is an interesting opinion, well done. I’d like you to develop your reasoning here by making sure your reasons are strong and relevant. Is it true that older people can’t go as long without food and if it is, why does that mean they are important? It will be really interesting to see you develop this opinion!

Technically they wouldn’t need a lift if anyone was pregnant, fireball storm. When my sister was pregnant, she went upstairs but she would sometimes ask her boyfriend for help. I also think that everyone deserves a home and that even if you are living on the streets, if you are happy where you are then that is great because its a home to fit you!

I believe that children should get a social house before the elderly because the elderly have a higher pain threshold compared to children and an injury would be more painful for children. Also children are children, they are innocent beings who deserve a heated home and they are more open to attacks from criminals and dangerous people (refernece Unicef rights for a child). Not only this children need food more than elderly because they are still developing as people and food is vital for this to happen. Children also need a safe and warm environment because they need long periods of sleep despite their disagreement in this matter. Other vital things children need more than elderly is a safe and happy environment because the things they learn at a young age is the foundations for their adult life- an unsafe place growing up is a huge impact on their later life for the worse. I am not saying that the elderly are not entitled to social housing, they are however children are in need of it more. In conclusion, I believe that children should have a social house before the elderly.

I think that children should pay less because they have there life ahead of them. Children haven’t got a job yet or don’t have a well paid job.The elderly people have had there jobs so they have money!

I think that both of those age groups should have a home. In fact everyone should! If the elderly don’t have home then it is harder for them to live a healthy life. Also, if children don’t have a shelter that keeps them safe, then that could cause damage to their life to when they are older and their education. They both need a comfortable and safe home to live in. I feel that if they do not have a home then they can live a really dangerous life. This needs to be fixed and the government need to make sure everyone has a home. Whatever age, skin colour, religion or gender!

I agree with you UnicornBurger , in this day in age all people should have a safe environment to live in. Safe being a warm place with the correct amount of space e.g if three people were living in a house there should be at least 2 bedrooms. Also, they should feel safe in their home and not feel threatened in any way from the people around them. If that person/people needs to be able to easily access a hospital they should live in a location which is relatively near a hospital. But there’s cost. Places in safer locations cost more, but why? Shouldn’t everyone live in a safe location ?

Hi fireball storm, Clover Moon here from TMA. Your question got me thinking, who is more important? Well, I think we are all equally important, though children and the elderly should have priority over other people. We are more prone to infections and viruses at these stages in our lives and should have a warm bed sleep in at night and a roof over our heads. It does not matter how old or young we are, we still need the security a house provides. I liked the reasoning you used, but think of it this way, if you were in the position of a council member needing to choose a house for the two types of people you mentioned and it was a top floor flat of a London high rise apartment block, who would you think should live there?

I think this is a very interesting question. However, did you know that if the child is alone (no parents, family friends etc.) the child wouldn’t go on the list for Social Housing. They would go into foster care. However, on the subject of who is more important, I believe we are all equal.

Hi Mickey, thanks for the comment youve really helped me to advance on my learning. I have conducted my own survey system research and have researched on the internet. I have discovered that the elderly do in fact have a higher pain threshold however children are younger so they heal faster. So despite the elderly having a higher pain threshold they are in pain for longer so it is roughly equivalent.

    I think that an elderly
Reason: an elder doesn’t really need anything so the workers can just make a small house because for children you need to pay for many extras .Also most kids like big houses.

@blackmagic13 I believe that children need social housing as much as the elderly. As children are young and have lives to live and they should have the best opportunity but but i also know that the elderly have as much right to social homes as children as a lot of elderly people are retired and so would be living of life savings and would be easier for those unemployed or retired to live in a social home.

  18. This is definitely a hard choice. I think everyone should be treated the same way, whether they are the elderly or the children. The elderly really need homes, for they are old and may have disabilities. But children also need a good home, since they need to live in a good invironment. It is s good question but very hard to answer!

  23. Well done, BNC! You have been posed with what is called a false dilemma: this means you have been given two options (housing the elderly or the young) and made to choose between them when, in reality, there are more than two options here. False dilemmas are great because they really make your brain work and you dig deeper into the bigger issues. For example: you have mentioned disability, life expectancy, fairness and how these affect people’s rights and value. Now let’s see if we can come up with a solution. If the government needs to house both young AND old people who are need, how should they do this? Where can they get the money from to help everyone? Olivia

    • St Gregory's Catholic Primary School St Gregory's Catholic Primary School

Great point Olivia! I think that the younger children should have a house because it could effect their life when they are older and the elderly can live in one of those peoples homes!

However, when it comes to who needs a house more, elderly or younger children; I think they both would have their equal needs. This is because the elderly are old and sometimes weak so they would need a lot of care but, children have a longer life ahead of them and they need to grow up in a good environment so I would find it very difficult to choose. In my opinion, children should be cared for in foster homes and elderly should be looked after in care homes.

Personally I believe the elderly should be homed children can go to an orphanage and foster home as well as be adopted but if the elderly didn’t have a home they would become homeless.I think it also depends on the home if an elderly person lives on the top flat they might have trouble getting to the top but I believe that kids shouldn’t be homeless everyone should get a chance to a home.@nkl

In our opinion we believe children should be the ones getting the homes because they need to be in a safe environment as they are children. However, children would housed with adults but the elderly are sick and they are needed with help and they need to be taken care off.In summery we would like to express our opinion that we believe that all should be helped and all cared for and should be all be housed.

I believe that children and elderly both need an sutibal accommodation due to the fact that:
    – Childern could develop a learning disability or a disability that could lead to them not being able to walk as they a very young in their life therefore they have struggle or can not get up the stairs ( then needing a lift if positioned in a flat)
-Eledrly are weaker than the younger generation, therefore if the slip on the stairs walking to their flat that could lead to a nasty injury or ( in the worst case scenario) fatality. Also some elderly have a pension ( a pension is money elderly save over time they can then use after they retire) and that might be limited if they was ( somehow) exploited at work.

In my opinion, children and elderly should be eligible from a well designed accommodation, tailored to their own disabilitys and needs

In my opinion I think that both should have a roof over there head because at the end of the day they’re human. And I think if a retired person, a homeless person or a preganant woman wanted social housing the government should give that person benefits since they’re either to old to have a job or can’t find a job or unable to do a job. Also if a person wanted social housing then the government should give them an okay home to live in which has a good community and close to were they work

    • Thanks for your comment, @Banjellacoco1! What barriers can you think of that mean that not everyone CAN have social housing? I’d like you to be really curious and find 3 reasons why there isn’t enough social housing. This would make a great post for the Hub!

      • Hornsey School for Girls Hornsey School for Girls

I think there is not enough social housing because there isn’t enough money or land to build on. There are also so many unoccupied houses that could be used as social houses that would increase the number. Maybe the government should consider using those houses? The other reason is that people buy their social houses and the council doesn’t replace them therefore there are lower numbers of social houses.

I believe that the elderly should be offered social housing because if they have any disabilities or health issues then it’s helpful to have a hospital nearby if you have a stroke, heart attack and so on. Prices should go down for the elderly as they may have to pay other money for appointments at the hospital. These people need it more than children because they generally have more health problems than children. Also the money that their parents earn makes it easier for them; the elderly have no one. witch’scat17

Everybody deserves a home, whether they are young or old. However, I think that the elderly are more inclined to living in more rural areas, where there is more space and room for houses, because urban area’s main attraction are jobs, and elderly people are very likely to be retired. However, I think everyone should be able to live where they want to.
