Weekly Competition #24

Gender neutral National Anthems.

Last week, we asked you to be open-minded about national anthems and to write or re-write one that was gender neutral. This was based on Canada's recent change in their lyrics, and Germany rejecting a change to revise their anthem. We enjoyed reading your entries and the creativity shown was excellent! Well done to Ravenscroft who were our Primary School winners. Their focus on unity, equality and happiness was optimistic. Our secondary winner came from Malcolm Arnold Academy. Their re-written English anthem was their first time writing lyrics. It was citizen focused and totally gender neutral. Well done!

This competition is now closed. You can enter the current competition here.

      I agree because back in the past women did not have rights. Women did not get to vote, only men did because most people think that women don’t have rights. Some think that they are not strong, others think that they can not do anything. So it is really unfair. But if everyone is equal that means that we can all have rights to do what ever we want. Plus women are great. They have created lots of stuff like, Central heating, computers and lots more. But if women do not have the rights then how do we have all the things we have now. It is because of women we have those things. So we should respect them and give them a chance.

    Turkey Nation Anthem

    turkish

    Korkma! Sönmez bu şafaklarda yüzen al sancak,
    Sönmeden yurdumun üstünde tüten en son ocak.
    O benim milletimin yıldızıdır, parlayacak;
    O benimdir, o benim milletimindir ancak.

    Çatma, kurban olayım, çehreni ey nazlı hilal!
    Kahraman ırkıma bir gül; ne bu şiddet, bu celal?
    Sana olmaz dökülen kanlarımız sonra helal…
    Hakkıdır, Hakk’a tapan milletimin istiklal.

    Ben ezelden beridir hür yaşadım, hür yaşarım,
    Hangi çılgın bana zincir vuracakmış? Şaşarım.
    Kükremiş sel gibiyim, bendimi çiğner, aşarım,
    Yırtarım dağları, enginlere sığmam, taşarım.

    Garbın afakını sarmışsa çelik zırhlı duvar,
    Benim iman dolu göğsüm gibi serhaddim var.
    Ulusun, korkma! Nasıl böyle bir imanı boğar,
    “Medeniyet” dediğin tek dişi kalmış canavar?

    Arkadaş! Yurduma alçakları uğratma sakın,
    Siper et gövdeni, dursun bu hayâsızca akın.
    Doğacaktır sana vadettiği günler Hakk’ın,
    Kim bilir, belki yarın belki yarından da yakın.

    Bastığın yerleri “toprak” diyerek geçme, tanı,
    Düşün altındaki binlerce kefensiz yatanı.
    Sen şehit oğlusun, incitme, yazıktır atanı,
    Verme, dünyaları alsan da bu cennet vatanı.

    Kim bu cennet vatanın uğruna olmaz ki feda?
    Şüheda fışkıracak, toprağı sıksan şüheda.
    Canı, cananı, bütün varımı alsın da Hüda,
    Etmesin tek vatanımdan beni dünyada cüda.

    Ruhumun senden İlahî, şudur ancak emeli:
    Değmesin mabedimin göğsüne namahrem eli.
    Bu ezanlar, ki şehadetleri dinin temeli,
    Ebedî, yurdumun üstünde benim inlemeli.

    O zaman vecdile bin secde eder, varsa taşım,
    Her cerihamdan, İlahî, boşanıp kanlı yaşım,
    Fışkırır ruhumücerret gibi yerden naaşım,
    O zaman yükselerek arşa değer belki başım.

    Dalgalan sen de şafaklar gibi ey şanlı hilal!
    Olsun artık dökülen kanlarımın hepsi helal.
    Ebediyen sana yok, ırkıma yok izmihlal.
    Hakkıdır, hür yaşamış bayrağımın hürriyet;
    Hakkıdır, Hakk’a tapan milletimin istiklal.

    Translated to english:

    Don’t be afraid, this red flag swaying in the horizon won’t fade away;
    Last fire burning on top of my country without going out.
    It is my nation’s star, it’ll glow;
    It is mine, it is my nation’s only.

    Don’t frown upon us, please O delicate crescent!
    Smile upon my glorious nation! What is this fury, anger?
    Or we will ask for our blood that we spilt for you,
    My nation which worships the rightous God deserves liberation!

    I’ve always been living in liberty, I’ll live in liberty.
    Which idiot is going to keep me in chains? Nonsense;
    I’m like a raging flood, I break through my dam;
    I’ll rip off the mountains, I wouldn’t fit into boundless fields, I’ll overflow.

    So what if ironclad walls surrounded the West horizon,
    The faith in my bosom is my borders.
    You’re almighty, don’t be afraid! How would strangle such a faith,
    What you call “Civilization” who is but a monster with one tooth?

    Friend! Don’t let scroundles into my country!
    Shield with your body, let this shameless invasion stop.
    Days which God has promised to give you will dawn;
    Who knows, maybe tomorrow, maybe sooner than tomorrow.

    Don’t simply pass through the soil, know it!
    Think of the thousands lying under without coffins.
    You’re of martyr’s lineage, don’t offend your ancestors;
    Don’t give away this beautiful land for anything.

    Who wouldn’t give his life for this beautiful land?
    Martyrs would flow out if you squeeze the soil, martyrs!
    God can take my life, my loved ones, all that is mine,
    My only wish is that may He not part me with my country.

    O Lord, my soul’s sole desire is that;
    You don’t let any stranger touch my shrine!
    These adhans which their witnessing is the foundation of the religion,*
    They should echo forever in my country

    Then I will gladly praise God if I can;
    My bloody tears flows away from my every wound,
    My corpse will gush out like an abstract soul;
    Then maybe my head will touch the heavens!

    Sway away like horizons, O glorious crescent;
    I won’t ask for my spilt blood now!
    There’s no devastation for you nor my nation ever.
    My free flag deserves freedom;
    My nation which worships the rightous God deserves liberation!

    “Lupang Hinirang” – Land of the Morning
    (My national anthem for The Philippines)
    Land of the morning, with our fervour burning, thee do our souls adore. Land so pure and holy; home of noble heroes, with our sons and daughters, our nation will prevail! But it is glory ever, when thou wronged for us; thy brothers and sisters to suffer and die.

    The first verse of my national anthem is trying to show how proud the citizens of the Philippines are for being a part of a country of culture and DIVERSITY. We remember the ones who died fighting for OUR country; we give thanks to the MEN and WOMEN who died in war- helping us become independent.

  22. Italy’s gender neutral anthem
    People of Italy,
    Italy has awakened;
    the general’s helmet
    has been put on their heads.
    Where is the Victory?
    Offer them the hair;
    because slave of Rome
    God created them.

    Let us unite!
    We are ready to die;
    Italy called.

    We have been for centuries
    stamped on, and laughed at,
    because we are not one people,
    because we are divided.
    Let’s unite under
    one flag, one dream;
    To melt together
    Already the time has come.

    Let us unite!
    We are ready to die;
    Italy called.

    Let’s unite, let’s love;
    The union and the love
    Reveal to the people
    God’s ways.
    We swear to liberate
    the native soil:
    United, for God,
    Who can beat us?

    Let us unite!
    We are ready to die;
    Italy called.

    From the Alps to Sicily,
    Everywhere is Legnano;
    Every person of Christianity
    has the heart and the hand;
    the children of Italy
    are called warriors;
    The sound of every church bell
    calling for evening prayers.

    Let us unite!
    We are ready to die;
    Italy called.

    They are branches that bend
    the sold swords;
    Already the eagle of Austria
    has lost its feathers.
    the blood of Italy
    and the Polish blood
    Drank with Cossacks
    But its heart was burnt.

    Let us unite!
    We are ready to die;
    Italy called.

    We loyal sons and daughters all
    Do hereby make it known
    These fields and hills beyond recall
    Are now our very own
    We write our names on history’s page
    With expectations great
    Strict guardians of our heritage
    Firm craftspeople of our fate

    The Lord has been the people’s guide
    For past three hundred years.
    With God still on the people’s side
    We have no doubts or fears.
    Upward and onward we shall go,
    Inspired, exulting, free,
    And greater will our nation grow
    In strength and unity.

    We loyal sons and daughters all
    Do hereby make it known
    These fields and hills beyond recall
    Are now our very own
    We write our names on history’s page
    With expectations great
    Strict guardians of our heritage
    Firm craftspeople of our fate
