Weekly Competition #25

 One question week!

Last week we asked whether or not you thought there was s problem with these magazines. We really loved reading your answers and the range of ideas that the question sparked. There was lots of emphasis on social conditioning - the idea that we are made to think something by society that may not be entirely true (for example, that boys should like the colour blue). Well done to Faringdon Community College, who didn't think there was a problem here and that stereotypes could be smashed! And to St Peter's, who held the contrasting view. Their reasoning was very interesting and they made points about the wider impact of magazines. You can read their full posts in the comments below.

This week's competition is now closed. You can enter the current competition by clicking here

There is nothing really wrong with them because they could be made for certain people but anyone could have them so its not that wrong. However, if they said that only a boy could get the lego/wrestling type ones and that only girls could get the princess ones, then there would be a problem.

Yes I Do Think That Its Wrong Because Pink On The GIRLS one IS SEXIST

In my opinion there is something wrong with this because the girls and boys magazines are separate which shouldn’t be because boys and girls should be treated equally . Also there is something wrong because the pink magazine only seems to be for girls and same with the magazines for boys they both seem like it is only for one gender which in my opinion is not fair.

  3. I think this is wrong becuause the magazine companies think all girls like pink stuff and princesses and boys like super heroes. I find this really offensive because its being very stereotypical and its making people think that they’re wrong because they like boys/girl things and feel guilty that they don’t like what they are ‘supposed’ to like according to the different gender stereotypes.

  4. I think there is a problem with these magazines because they’re being stereotypical, they’re thinking just because they are girls they have to put ‘Pink’ and ‘Cute’ and for boys they have ‘WWE’ and ‘Mega’ and they’re just being sexist. Some girls might not be girly girl and like pink and cute stuff and some boys could like girly stuff and like WWE, mega, because they’re interested in it.

i think nothing is wrong with them because it is just a magazine with little surprises and if it is pink it doesn’t matter because little girls might like it . Also wrestling is something boys like it is a hobby. It might be a inspiring for boys?

I think there is nothing wrong with them. I think this because everyone is different. The shop people won’t automatically know how a person’s like unless they ask every single person in the world. Then again, it’s highly likely to forget most of us. If a woman who hated books was recommended a book by the Shopkeeper, it’s not their fault. The Shopkeepers are trying to window shop( I think that’s what they call it) on someone’s looks. They are judging someone on the way they look. 49% of the time they might want it and 49% might not (the remaining 2% are the ‘I don’t know.’) I did a bit of research on the pink and blue thing and I found this website https://www.scoopwhoop.com/inothernews/how-pink-became-the-girly-colour/#.69zvfkh8e

The whole thing started from the war when the men wore blue rather than the traditional pink. The Makers of Barbie didn’t want to make the women wear blue because of their gender counterpart. So they switched this. This was only supposed to be temporary however the 2 genders got used to this and so it switched so I think the Shopkeepers are just using this philosophy to make their magazines.

I think that there is a problem one is really pink and girly and has princesess all over it but on the other hand one has batman, lego and is very boyish I think that in the superhero magazine they should add some girl things and some boy things on the girls magazine but also a boy can have the left one and a girl can have the right I mean I know a lot of girls who love lego and there is nothing wrong with that and a boy who loves jewels and the colour pink and we shouldn’t say that a boy can’t do certain things and a girl can’t do certain things because there are a lot of boys who like to dress up wearing dresses and makeup but because they are told that they shouldn’t they tend not to say anything about it I mean a boy or girl trying to be the opposite sex is serious it means they don’t feel right in the body that they are in they want to be in another that is why magazine companies should add a little of everything to a magazine.

  8. Colegrave Primary School Colegrave Primary School

I think there is a problem with it because it is basically saying that pink is for girls but not all girls like pink and some boys like pink and it is sexist and offending to some people because it is very difficult for them if they are not the gender they want to be and if they become transgender it makes life difficult because they could be getting bullied. If you were them then how would you feel?

I do think that it is wrong because they are being stereotypical.why do they have to make one really pink and girly and one that has spiderman and stuff like wwe and people think that is is cute and handsome but it is not.it is not fair because what if a girl wanted to buy the blue on and the boy wanted to buy the pink one and their parents say “NO!!!!!!!!” “You cant buy that.it is for boys.it is not fair because 1:they have a right to freedom and 2:they have the right to have fun and choose whatever they want to buy no mater what people or what their parents say

There is nothing wrong with these magazines as neither of them says “boys magazines” nor “girls magazines”. One the left (On the second magazines), it shows a photo of Miraculous Ladybug. This is an anime which I watch and it doesn’t say “for girls”. Therefore it is wrong to assume that pink is a color for girls and wee/blue is for boys.

I believe that there is a massive problem with the magazines as the ‘girls ones’ would have toys in them that would ( or the company’s think) appeal to girls and the ‘boys’ magazines have more masculine toys like water guns and other toys like that.

I believe that there is nothin wrong with it because it doesn’t say that in 1st picture is for girls and not for boys but if it did, that would be a big problem because it doesn’t matter what gender you are , because if I was a ‘boy’ and I wanted a pinkish magazine it wouldn’t matter because it’s just a magazine but if were a problem like a race and religious beliefs then it would be one because it makes you feel more uncomfortable with who you are so what matters is that you are beautiful and confident inside your heart no matter what…So what I’m tryingto say is the magazine is not much of a problem

  16. Elaine Primary Academy Elaine Primary Academy

I don’t think there is a problem. Yes, they are gender divided but that doesn’t specifically mean you have to be that gender to buy. There is no shame in a boy buying a girl’s magazine or vice versa. People only see the problem because they think these magazines are meant for the gender they advertise.

    KaraokeKat

  17. I don’t think there is anything wrong with these magazines as it doesn’t specify which is for each gender. If it did then there would be a problem as it is saying men like superheroes and action while its saying women like pink and princesses.
    Sparnosaur12

  18. I see one problem with these magazines; the contents inside them aren’t widely varied! For example, newspapers have different categories like sports, fashion or politics. This gives you a wide range of articles to read about; if you’re not into fashion, you can read the sports page and vice versa. With these magazines, the items aren’t spread. If you want glitter inside your magazine, but it’s inside a ‘girly’ package, a boy might feel self-conscious about buying one. Society has had an impact on us; even as little children, we’re taught to like certain things.
    OriginallyCurious

  19. Yes and no, because there is nothing to say that a girl can’t buy the WWE magazine and there is nothing to say the boy can’t buy the num noms and shopkins magazines. However, if someone started making fun of a girl for buying a magazine that had been ‘made for a boy’ then things would start to get out of hand. The same goes likewise, for example if a boy is made fun of for buying a magazine ‘made for a girl’. Overall, as long as shops don’t put restrictions on who can buy what and people don’t get made fun of for buying that they are interested in than there is not a problem.

There is a problem with these magazines. The boys magazines have like guns and that stuff when the girls have like cute puppy’s or something like that. Some girls are also interested with guns and WWE. How girls and boys look and act does not mean you have to actually stereotype them for liking guns etc. People have different interests into different things. Some boys are interested in Barbie and some girls like Power Rangers.

i agree with loopylama because there might be some girls who like super hero or Lego or WWE stuff. And not all girls like pink, it’s actually stereotyping. And some boys like pink purple or barbies. All boys and girls like Disneyland, Legoland.

I believe that there is a massive problem with the magazines, some girls are like tomboys who like dark colours and some are girly girls who like bright colours but that is NOT true!I have a friend who like dusty pink and is a tomboy.Another one of my friends is a girly girl and likes baby blue.So I think that shopkeepers should make it equal and not stereotype others.

This is really unfair because the girl’s magazines are all pink and full of princess stuff that most girls might not even like and the boy’s magazine is about heroes and games which they might not even like. I am a girl I don’t even like pink I like blue and so does a lot of other girls I know. Princesses are part of making young girls act the way they are, princesses are a big influence of being girly.

I think this is a really bad stereotype, because as you could see on the picture, the magazine on the left was pink and had a princess on it, but I am a girl and my favourite colour is turquoise as well as pink and I don’t like princesses as much as people think I would. The one on they opposite side had Lego super heroes and WWE / Fighting characters with dark colours on it, but some boys might want the ones in the girls category and would love bright things and princesses.

Although if humans had not said red is for boys, pink is for girls. This would be fine, but we are assuming that people cannot break barriers but we can.Does it matter where the magazine is?It will take people to see a boycott take a pink magazine for another to follow.

  32. Faringdon Community College Faringdon Community College

Is there a problem with these magazines?

Well. It is not right but everyone know that the one on the left is aimed at girls ( it has words like ‘cute’ and ‘princess’ and pictures of unicorns and fairies) and the one on the right is aimed at boys (it has words like ‘mega’ and ‘gaming’ and has pictures of super heroes and wrestling). This is not right, but it is the stereotypical view of girls and boys: that girls like pink princesses and fairies and that boys like comics, wrestling and super heroes.

They are obviously aiming the pink magazines at young girls and the wwe and superheroe magazine at young boys, and this is not ok. However, i do not find this terrible as it does not reference on the front covers that a certain magazine is for girls or boys. This leaves the option open for girls to choose the wrestling magazine if they want, it doesn’t tell them that they should be not reading the wrestling magazine, that this is ‘only for boys’.

These magazines don’t bother me.: a boy or girl could buy the wrestling magazine and a boy or girl could buy the fairy magazine. It doesn’t tell either gender what they should do, act like and read. What bothesr me is things like this:

When I was younger I went to Aldi and saw some nice books full of mythical stories. I flicked through both. One had knights in armour, dragons and evil magicians and the other had fairies, princesses and palaces. And guess what? The one with knights was called ‘best book of bedtime stories for boys’ and the other with princesses was called ‘best book of bedtime stories for girls’. However, I, personally did not want to read about princesses, I didn’t want to read about a princess party in a silly pink castle so, i got my pocket money out and bought the book for boys. Why, just as a girl should i be told I should read this book, not this other one which I would enjoy more. By labelling this book for boys it tells some girls that they shouldn’t like dragons and knights in shining armour.

These stereotypes exist and they are not OK, we all need to know that a girl or boy doesn’t have to like this or that and that they can read about fairies OR dragons

In the case, I decided to ignore these stereotypes, I bought the book that told be it was ‘for boys’ and despite whoever made it thinks I enjoyed reading about knights and dragons a lot, thank you very much.

  33. The problem with this is that the ‘girls’ magazines are pink all over but the ‘boys’
are of varied colours like red and blue. Boys would feel self-conscious if they wanted
something from the girls magazines as it would most probably have pink all over.

    -JoJoSays-

  34. The problem with these magazines is that, if you are a boy and you want something from the pink magazines you might feel a little embarrassed about your decision. the pink ones are aimed, by magazine makers, at girls. while the red and blue ones are aimed at boys. everybody finds this normal, however if magazine companies stopped making ‘girly’ magazines and ‘boyish’ magazines the general consensus would change. Now, another problem with these magazines is the fact that they are filled with nonsense. As originally curious said earlier we are taught, not by a direct way, but by seeing what people find unusual, and what people think is ‘normal’, at a young age to like or want certain things. from the moment you are born, if you are a girl you get wrapped up in a pink blanket and a blue one for boys then you get ‘boy’ toys or ‘girl’ toys. The two main problems are: one, they teach you nothing. two, they are aimed certain genders.

  44. St Peter's Primary School St Peter's Primary School

In my opinion these magazines are being sexist because it is basically saying pink is for girls and blue is for boys- think about baby blankets, you can never get a blue one for girls. A question i always seem to ask my friends is: what is your favourite colour? The majority of girls i asked answered: blue or red. So basically magazines like ‘sweet’ are getting the whole likes of a girl totally wrong. I know at least 15 boys who prefer the colour pink to blue. I am a girl and i prefer turquoise and my mum and my sisters- so what! Another point i want to make is that if you go to IKEA you will see that the stuff they put out for a girls display is all pink and the boys have blue and red! I have lots of friends who collect the Beano. I was rather upset after reading my beano. I went to the ‘win a prize page’ and saw that the prizes they offered were: a ‘hulk haul’, a spiderman scooter and a batman outfit. Ok some girls might have been happy as they could have liked superheros but i wasn’t interested in them. I guess Beano forgot that the comic includes girl charecters and girls send in fan mail which is often displayed on their fan page. I hope i have explained my point and thanks for reading!

We think that the magazines are based on age and gender because when you go into the shop you see certain magazines for both boys and girls and you see age limits. For example: fairy things for 3 yr old girls and then you see football things for the likes of 10 yr old boys. On most magazines you see things that is a 3+ and 10 or 11 yr old children don’t want babyish toys. Most little kids just want the toys. Are they really going to read the magazines as older kids don’t read them.

I think that is just how people think. People think that girls must be grown to be involved in “girly things” and if not there seen to be different or “unusual” they should be encouraged to show who they are and not be judged by anyone; they should definitely not have to fight for what they believe in whilst they watch boys be accepted easily.

  50. St Peter's Primary School St Peter's Primary School

I think there are a few problems with these magazines..
    1. the colors on them are based on the gender that the magazine company want to sell it to
    2. look at the names: on the pink ones the names are PINK! and CUTE! whilst the other ones are called names like MEGA.
    3. a girl buying a LEGO magazine may feel embarassed if her friends were with her while a boy might feel awkward buying his favourite girly magazine
    4. the name on the covers may make children (of either sex) feel vunerable, angry or depressed. what I mean by this is that in the LEGO magazine it may have messages like “big boys don’t cry” or “boys are stronger than girls” ETC while the other one ( the pink, fluffy, rainbows and unicorns one) may pass on messages like “women are meant to be pretty” and so on. The impact of these messages can be pretty destructive. E.G. the messages from the LEGO magazine will make a boy feel like he cannot express his feelings. Think of it like this: the message goes from ” big boys don’t cry” to “bottled up and ready to burst”. this will not help the child to control their emotions as they age. on the other hand, the other magazine’s messages may go from something like this: “strong is beautiful” to “beauty is everything”. imagine what the child will grow up like and how many friend she has? she might spend 2 hours doing her makeup like some famous people when she is an ordinary person who should be doing other things in those 120 minutes. girls who get those messages will grow up thinking they are celebrities. that’s not right. celebrities spend an excessive amount of money and time on beauty, health and so on. that’s not natural. it’s just wrong. nobody who is anybody should be upset about themselves. we are all different and so we should be happy we are unique. difference is a good thing. without it just think about what the world would be like.
    5. the gifts on the covers are also based on the genders. on the pink ones the gifts are things like: lip-glosses, fairy wands, little surprise toys or rubbers in opaque packets and things cover in rhinestones and pink glitter. now look at the gifts on the LEGO magazines. they include things like Pokémon cards, space blasters (they’re an bit like nerf guns) and bouncy balls. you don’t see those things in PINK! magazines do you?

i think this is very unfair and extremely sexist because it encourages boys to buy LEGO magazines and girls to buy pink, glittery ones. and the toys aren’t even that good! they break within an week (most of the time anyway. one toy i had broke the day i bought it) this is even more disgraceful as it makes the children want to buy the magazines even more just for the sake of the toys.

I hope you enjoyed my entry, thanks for reading! 😀

    Yes,
I do think that there is a problem with theses magazines because, the magazines have created two separate magazines, one for a boy and one for a girl . Why cant the put unisex items inside the magazine and make it a whole magazine or you could put girl and boy items in one magazine for those who have brothers and sisters that way they wont need to worry about buying two separate magazines and buy one with items for different genders? In addition the girls magazines are pink and the boys are red ,blue and other sorts of colors that you will normally find in boys magazines at the store. Girls should be allowed to have different types of colors other than pink and purple, as well as boys being allowed to have different colors (blue, red, yellow, green)

    The Girl’s Magazines
The problem with these magazines is that they are very stereotypical. This is showing by having the girls magazines covered in pink and actually I prefer blue and turquoise myself. One of the girls magazines is actually called ‘pink’. Also the problem with these magazines is that the girls magazines are smothered in bright colours although, some girls might prefer dark colours like navy or black. Another problem with the girls magazines is that there is a princess wand in there even though some girls might not like princesses.
    The Boy’s Magazines
The problem with the boy’s magazines is that there are lots of blue and red on the magazines even though as I said i prefer blue and im a girl. Another problem is that there is superman on the cover which is not just a boy’s thing. I also noticed in the boy’s magazine there is a packet of pokemon cards. Pokemon was a very big trend in 2017 and it still is. As this trend went by I realized that alot of girls liked the cards too so this just shows that pokemon is not just a girls thing. On the right the WWE magazine got taken into my interest because just because there aren’t alot of girl WWE wrestlers doesn’t mean that girls aren’t into wrestlers/ wrestling.

These are the problems that I found in these magazines.
