  1. I translated what was on the most visible poster and it translated to we want education and health schools and hospitals standard FIFA. The picture having posters and a mascot makes it looks there could be some sort of protest. However, it seems as if there directing the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) but as the world cup is coming up soon the country or even city protesting may have some issues with them.

Without translation, I see the word “FIFA” which is linked to football (noting the upcoming world cup) therefore this could have something to do with protests over what team or country will win the world cup title, hence the flags in the backround and the mascot. Also, I spotted the word “E Hospítals” which easily translates to Hospitals. As a result, this could be a key topic surrounding the new issue.

I agree with you. But when I searched on this link -(https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/br/deed.en)
It mentioned something to do with Brazil. So if this is a protest, people either from Brazil or people that are in Brazil could be part of this protest.

The ‘bigger picture’ means the situation as a whole. How does the picture shown here link to our whole new issue?

My question is:what is the person in the centre wearing?
I’m asking this question because this costume (the mask in particular) is eye catching and unique and so it could represent something, be making a statement and I was wondering what it stands for and why the person is wearing it.

This photo is from the 2014 Anti-World Cup protest that happened all over Brazil weeks before the 2014 FIFA World Cup hosted in Brazil.

    The poster roughly translates to:
    WE WANT EDUCATION
    AND HEALTH, AND SCHOOLS
    AND HOSPITALS
    FIFA STANDARD

(I am assuming “FIFA STANDARD” means a high-quality standard that is internationally recognised.)

Protesters was protesting about the vast amount of public money the Brazilian government put into building the Maracanã Stadium, and renovating 12 other existing football stadiums for the FIFA World Cup, when the public thought that the money could have been spent on improving public services such as health and education. However, President Rousseff stated that budgets for education and health will not be affected.

To look at Brazil’s economy, Brazil is currently the world’s 8th largest economy, and in comparison to the UK economy, which is ranked 5th. However, their health care is ranked 125th out of 191 (World Health Organisation, 2000), which is very poor, compared to the UK’s rank 9th. And Brazil’s education is said to be average, underperforming (Programme for International Student Assessment, 2015) ranking 67th, 65th, and 61 in Maths, Science, and Reading respectively, and with literacy rates over the age of 15, of 91.7% (UNESCO, 2014). In comparison, the UK is ranked 27th, 15th, and 22nd in Maths, Science, and Reading respectively.

In my opinion, I understand the public’s anger, as stadiums, such as Olympic stadiums, they are often left abandoned and unused, or demolished after the events are over, and that is a waste of billions of dollars, money which could have been used on improving health care, and education by increasing their budgets if they had so much money to spend. Brazil does not have the one of the best education or health care systems in the world, but it can be improved with more money. More money in these public services can provide better education meaning a more educated country, which can improve the economy due to better business management, creating new businesses, which creates more jobs, and therefore improving the economy; and educating new healthcare professions, and training existing ones to provide better healthcare.

However, some might argue that hosting such games can bring money into the country from tourism – they visit they country, they spend money on accommodation, food and souvenirs, creating a boom meaning businesses can hire more staff, increasing employment rates. And these games create jobs too, the government hire people to build the stadium and to improve infrastructure. On the other hand, most of the times, spending on these games exceeds the income, and if there is economic impact, it is insufficient.

In additionally to hosting FIFA World Cup in 2014, Brazil also hosted the Olympics Games in 2016, and both the Olympic Park and the Maracanã Stadium have been abandoned and unused since the games have finished. This is a waste of tax payers’ money, since it was estimated Brazil spent $15 billion, whereas, FIFA who did not spend any money, reported made $2.4 billion in profit from the Brazil FIFA World Cup. And according to Central Bank preliminary forecasts released in July 2014 (after the FIFA World Cup) the Brazilian economy actually weakened.

    So, my question is:
SHOULD COUNTRIES OF ANY ECONOMIC CLIMATE CONTINUE TO HOST EXPENSIVE GAMES AT TAX PAYERS EXPENSE WHEN IT DOES LITTLE TO BENEFIT THE COUNTRY AND ITS PEOPLE?

  8. The translation of the slogan is: We want education and health schools and hospitals pattern. But what first caught my eye was the way the thing (which i’m still curious about) was dressed; but then i looked at the words. The first word i noticed was FIFA which was underlined. So my question is: What does FIFA have to do with education, health schools and hospital patterns.

Why do the Brazilian government think is acceptable to pay more than 3 billion to make new stadiums and renovate other stadiums to fit FIFA’s ‘requirements’ when they could use the money to focus on the areas that are suffering from poverty?

I translated what the words meant on the sign the person is holding up next to the mascot and it translates to, ‘’ we want education and health schools and hospitals standard FIFA.’’ I thought about it and it may mean, ‘’We want more money sent to schools and hospitals instead of FIFA.’’

and as everyone knows FIFA must earn tons of money maybe they feel like protesting the fact that schools and hospitals need more money instead of paying for World Cup Games to be held at their country and I get that sports is entertaining and fun but shouldn’t we be focusing on the more important things i.e: Education and health? – X_KawaiiRaven_X

  24. Ravenscroft Primary School Ravenscroft Primary School

I agree with #red fox WHY is he wearing cuffs? Could people be trying to say Fifa are criminals? Fifa has been paid a lot of money from Brazil for stadiums and support for the world cup. Are Brazilian civilians trying to call Fifa criminals for taking their money for hospitals and schools?

So, I’ve been searching about this and I found out there’s a problem with FIFA and the government. As the translated version said “We want education and health schools and hospital standard” and the government needs money for hospitals and schools. So they might be protesting about that. Also, America is investigating about FIFA after they were taking dollars from people who are bribing! I have a theory about their mascot (in the picture) why he’s in handcuffs. He breaks free because their protesting about it and when he lets people host it, He gets money for schools and hospitals.

So I think that the FIFA players are accepting bribes and that the government is giving more money to the footballs and this is not good.

  28. Ravenscroft Primary School Ravenscroft Primary School

In this picture, I think people are protesting about FIFA. The sentence on the sign translates to “We want education and health schools and hospitals standard”. The mascot in this picture is actually FIFA’s mascot with handcuffs on one of his hands.
I’ve read many websites about where FIFA gets some of their money by accepting bribes from other people. Maybe the people are trying to say that FIFA should be using part of the money they’re earning to donate to hospitals and to schools. They earn hundreds of millions of money but they use most of it on other things when they can be using it to give to other things that are more important. After all, they earn so much money on things that could be used for better things. In my opinion, FIFA should use part of the money they’ve earned to donate to more important things such as schools, charities and hospitals.

queremos educação e saúde e hospitais padrão da FIFA means we want education and health schools and hospitals standard FIFA. I feel like people are protesting in streets that Russia shouldn’t host the World Cup.
    Why?
Well I’m going to myself in the mind of those people. In 321!

Why should Russia hold the World Cup? What have they done to deserve this ? Their president , Vladimir Putin , ordered a Spie to die. There’s no-one worse to host the World Cup. Threating The World to use their powerful nuclear weapons. Hacking into computers and changing the voting results. Would Trump really have won? Can’t somewhere else more responsible hold the World Cup .

    Now back to my mind.

There are rumours ,Russia, bribed the head of FIFA to let them host.

So far, during this issue, I have learnt that sports and politics shouldn’t mix and there are rules to prevent it, however, this image shows politics – protesting – and spots – as it mentions FIFA. I believe they are trying to use the televised FIFA event to show that they want education and hospitals. What I wonder is if they can get away with breaking the rules.

i think that they are try to say that you should obey there rule and if you don’t you will be fined and if you still don’t listen you and your team get kick out of the torment and you will let your team down so the message is just listen to the rule and don’t let your country down
