Weekly Competition #35

Last week we wanted to hear headlines that you were unsure about.  We asked you to write ONE reason why you thought a headline might be true and ONE reason why it might be false.

Well done to Willowtown Primary School who told us about a micro-pig who is apparently good at predictions and St Saviour’s & St Olave’s who raised an eyebrow at Obama's alledged drugs stash.Excellent scepticism shown, Burnet News Club!

This competition is now closed. You can enter the current competition here.

This might be true because it says on the BBC news website that the pig known as Mystic Marcus has predicted the future before. In 2014 he predicted the fifa world cup and was correct, he has also done this with the brexit referendum and Donald Trumps election.

This might be false because the people who posted it with BBC have no proof from what I have found so far.

I believe this pig has magic powers if you do not agree with me then reply with your opinion please!

White house staff maid found Obamas ‘secret stash of drugs’

this headline could possibly be real because there are multiple news headline online and all from different news paper brands,if this is the case wouldn’t of Obama clear up these ‘false’ accusations?

however there is also a chance that this statement is false and someone did write this artical for fun this is because there was no continuation of this issue ,it was like a case gone cold,of course this also wouldn’t look good on his behalf as old president of the USA

i would love to hear your opinions, feel free to comment with your belief of this

‘Purge of the middle class’ fears as staff at top firms are asked if they went to public school (The Telegraph, 15/06/2018)

It might be true because employers do look at what school and what qualifications you have attained when applying for jobs, so in a job interview it is not unheard of to not talk about your school and/or your qualifications.

It might be false because it is hard to verify whether or not employers asked interviewees if they attended a fee-paying school or not, and you were to ask the company if it was true, they would most likely deny it if there is no evidence to prove they asked such question during a job interview, so I’m not sure if I can trust it.

This headline could be true because when Messi did miss the penalty shot, he could have felt really bad and it could have left an aching pain inside of him.
This headline could be false, though , because even though Messi could have been massively disappointed, it might have not really left a pain.

Marvellous Messi misses a precious penalty and ruins his exceptional reputation!

This could be true because he has an amazing reputation and all of a sudden he misses a penalty.

This could be false because he is fabulous at football and one mistake is not bad at all!

    Fascinating football is fun!

This is true because the footballers love playing football and everyone is entertained by it!

This is false because sometimes when a team loses they become aggressive and violent then they begin to fight and hurt people.

This is true because when people watch the wold cup the footballers love it and they know that they are being watched buy over 1000000 people or more

this is false because when footballers lose the odiance become angry and guy but hopefully they don’t fight

This is true because they try hard to win and show compassion and collaboration

This is false because the audience doesn’t go wild and they moan and shout

“We have a very good mix of young with a few experienced players in the team. And we are happy together, togetherness is what is going to inspire us to do well in Russia.”
Nigeria defender Brian Idowu talks about the Super Eagles’ optimism ahead of Russia 2018
Football is unique and this quote is powerful as Russia does not allow people to be individuals.

“A boycott – simply don’t purchase any FIFA points during the promos and spread the word” – they are saying stop buying FIFA points because FIFA will be hit by not earning enough profits. And also they say let the people who like football could keep on supporting their team.

  12. Foxfield Primary School Foxfield Primary School

“The World Cup experience is more than just the game of soccer. It’s an event!” It is more than just a game because football fans follow teams all over the world. The footballers can be good role models and show values that Russia do not have to the world and Russia. It may make people in Russia think they do not want to accept things as they were or are.

Gosport hospital deaths: Prescribed painkillers ‘shortened 456 lives’
This could be true as there is evidence of 456 lives been shortened as the people given the painkillers and have died.
This could not be true as they haven’t pressed any charges on one of the doctors they found guilty and it could have been a set up and not Gosport hospital that did it.

  14. Ravenscroft Primary School Ravenscroft Primary School

‘Miss! Are your classes making me blind?’

This could be true because more and more classes are using technology and people say that looking to close to a screen could damage your eyes. They tables are near the screen.

But, this could also not be true because there are other things like whiteboards teachers can use. Most of the time we are writing stuff on paper or books. Even some subjects don’t use a screen.

Over 4.5 million British children breathing toxic air, Unicef says.

This could be true as Britain is known for being quite polluted because there are many factories and vehicles being used. Due to their short height, they apparently inhale a third more pollution than adults, according to the website.

This could be false because this has not been properly confirmed. Therefore, the tests aren’t accurately correct since they could be completely wrong.

This is something I’ve been researching for a while now and these are my opinions.

This could be true as Nasa announced this and they did have future reading about this collision

However I also think this sis false because it has two dates and apparently a lot of people are saying this is false.
