Young or old?

After our discussion in BNC about rising house prices, I think it will be incredibly difficult for young people to get a mortgage. One way to fix that would be to introduce a government subsidized mortgage to help young people get on the property ladder. Sounds great, right? But… there isn’t a lot of money for housing, anyway, and this decision would probably take money away from the old people’s care home/supported housing fund. Who do you think deserves housing more, our generation or our grandparent’s generation?

  1. Thanks, NellieBly: the2nd,

This is a really interesting solution. The government does actually do something like this, although there are limits to it. I’d like you to research ‘Help to Buy ISAs’.
This will help improve your curiosity about the issue. Once you’ve done some research, it would be interesting to see your thoughts on how the government is helping young people to buy houses.
Remember that lots of BNC members won’t have researched this topic so you’ll need to make sure everyone can understand what you’re talking about. This will help your storytelling skills!

I predict that elderly people deserve a home from social housing because if an old women is 86 and they may have a broken hip or heart problems they may be able to live next to a hospital. Their health problems are more important.

It is important for old people to have social housing first so they can have more help and care .

It depends. If you are ill and old you should be entitled to social housing.

    • Thanks for your comment, Newsgamer79! I’m interested to hear more about your opinion. Do you think people should get social housing if they aren’t ill, and why do you think this? Asking yourself ‘why do I think this’ is a really good way to develop your reasoning and curiosity.

I think old people should get a home because they could be sick. Their health problems may be getting very bad and which may cause them to pass away.

I think both! Everyone equally deserves a home just as much as the next person. Its hard for grandparents to to a lot of things and us kids would like to live in a house because we have a lot of need as well as others. We all need a home!

You’ve shown great open-mindedness here by thinking about both sides of the debate. I want to push you a bit further on this. If you had to choose between housing an elderly person or a child, which would you choose and why? Answering this question will push you to develop your reasoning!

Both because children need healthy life ahead of them and elderly because the might pass away so they want a shelter before they die

I think that we should leave the houses for the elderly and have the rest of them for us as young people and we should also have a right to be in housing

Honestly, I think that under 18’s should live with parents and the people that are over 50 should live in a bungalow. All the people between that age should be able to have the houses. however the elderly should also be able to be happy in retirement so I don’t really know.

  13. I am on both sides , however i think grandparents need looking after and should live with family members. I also think that young people should get a good job before leaving there parents house otherwise they are relying on there parents which should not happen.

I think a child needs a home more than the elderly because a child needs a well educated life and a healthy life to carry on a lovely living life when they are older! The elderly can stay in an elders home for care!

  15. I mean this in no disrespect and if I offend anybody with this post I am deeply sorry. I think that young people should have first priority over elderly because it’s the young people who have their life in front, elderly people don’t have as much life to live. The young people are the future and if they spend half their life homeless that’s not really going to be a very good future is it?

@blackmagic13 I think that a mortgage for young people is a great idea as it would help get young people on their feet and help them get going in life though i do know that old people with maybe illness’s or just oldness do need to be look after sometimes. But i believe that young people should get the mortgage as they still have a life to live where as old people may be coming to the end of theirs.

I think that it depends if they have health problems than they should get social housing near a hospital yet young people should also get social housing as they have there whole life ahead them

I think you are right because if people should get a social housing if they have health problems because they should not be homeless or they should not have a social housing when they should have a social housing
