Alastair Burnet Award Competition Rules

1. Introduction

These competition terms and conditions (“Terms”) set out the terms for the Competition detailed below held by The Economist Education Foundation, a company registered under the laws of England and Wales with registered address at The Adelphi, 1-11 John Adam Street, London, England, WC2N 6HT (“Promoter”).

2. The competition

2.1 The title of the competition is “Alastair Burnet Award” (“Competition”). The Competition will run from 22 January 2024 to 18 March 2024, both dates inclusive or until the Promoter provides a public notice that the Competition has ended, whichever is earlier (“Competition Period”). Entries will only be accepted during the Competition Period.

2.2 The Competition is open to all eligible schools with participating classes in the ‘Topical Talk Festival’ run from 22 January 2024 to 18 March 2024 (“Entrant”). Participating classes only include classes from government funded schools with students of ages 10- 16 years old. In entering the Competition, you confirm that you are eligible to do so and eligible to claim any prize you may win. The Promoter may require you to provide proof that you are eligible to enter the Competition.

2.3 Each person who enters into the Competition agrees to be bound by these Terms.

3. How to enter and winner selection

3.1 To enter the Competition an Entrant must have actively participated in the ‘Topical Talk Festival’.

3.2 Entry is only valid through this medium and manner.

3.3 The entries will be judged and at the discretion of trained teachers of the Promoter. The criteria for judging will include (a) evidence of students using the Topical Talk knowledge and skills framework in the contributions on the Festival Student Hub (b) overall engagement of the class and its students with content on the Festival Student Hub.

4. The prize

4.1 The prize is (a) GBP 1000 sent to the winning school via BACS transfer, and (b) a post published on the Festival Student Hub and in the Festival Highlights magazine in print and online celebrating the winning class (“Prize”). Only one school will win the Alastair Burnet Award in this Competition.

4.2 Prizes are subject to availability and the winner having provided the schools banking details. The Promoter reserves the right to substitute the Prize with a prize of equal or greater value if circumstances beyond the Promoter's control makes it necessary to do so. The Promoter shall not be responsible for delivery of the Prize where incorrect details have been provided by the winner.

4.3 The Prize is not negotiable or transferable.

5. Winners

5.1 The decision of the judges nominated by the Promoter is final and no correspondence or discussion will be entered into.

5.2 The Promoter will notify winner via email as used on the winners Topical Talk account or about 19 March 2024 (“Announcement Date”).

5.3 An Entrant may be asked to provide a copy of proof of registration as a school, in order to be eligible to receive the Prize. The Promoter reserves the right to conduct the validation and verification process. By participating in the Competition, all Entrants consent to the appropriate validation and verification measures that the Promoter may implement from time to time.

6. Claiming the prize

6.1 If you are the winner of a Prize, you will have 30 of days from the Announcement Date to claim the Prize. If you do not claim the Prize by this date, your claim will become invalid.

6.2 The Promoter will make all reasonable efforts to contact the winner. If the winner cannot be contacted or is not available, or has not claimed their prize within 30 of days of the Announcement Date, the Promoter reserves the right to offer the Prize to the next eligible Entrant using the same winner selection process.

6.3 The Promoter does not accept any responsibility if you are not able to take up the Prize.

6.4 In order to claim the Prize you must provide any necessary detail to the Promoter and/or its agent for its delivery. Failure to do so may result in forfeiture of a Prize.

7. General

7.1 Insofar as is permitted by law, the Promoter, its agents or distributors will not in any circumstances be responsible or liable to compensate an Entrant or accept any liability for any loss, damage, personal injury or death occurring as a result of taking up the Prize or participation in the Competition except where it is caused by the negligence of the Promoter, its agents or distributors or that of their employees.

7.2 The timelines stated by the Promoter or its agent must be adhered to. Failing adherence to any timeline, at any stage, may result in disqualification and forfeiture of a Prize in its entirety with no compensation to any party by the Promoter.

7.3 By entering the Competition Entrants agrees and consents to:

  • (a) the Promoter processing the Entrants personal information, including name, address, and/or email address, during and after the course and scope of the Competition;
    and
  • (b) the Promoter transferring the winning Entrants personal information, including name, address, and/or email address, to the relevant third parties in order for delivery of the Prize, or other arrangements, as may be applicable, during the course and scope of the Competition.

The Economist Educational Foundation as Data Controller of Entrant’s Personal Data
agrees that the data processing and any transfers of that data outside the UK shall take place in accordance with the provisions of all laws relating to privacy and data protection applicable to a Party including but not limited to (a) the General Data Protection Regulation (EU 2016/679) ("GDPR"); (b) the UK GDPR (as defined in section 3(10) of the UK Data Protection Act 2018), and (c) Directive on Privacy and Electronic Communications (2002/58/EC, as amended), as well as all laws implementing each of the above, including the UK Data Protection Act 2018 and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003, each as amended, updated or replaced from time to time (“Data Protection Legislation”).

7.4 With the exception of Competition rule 7.3 above, the Promoter will not share any personal information with any third party except where such disclosure is necessary to enable the Promoter to provide, deliver or in any other way give effect to these Terms and/or a Prize, where such disclosure is permitted by law and/or where consent to sharing personal information is obtained from the relevant Entrant by the Promoter. The Promoter will comply with Data Protection Legislation.

7.5 If there is any reason to believe that there has been a breach of these terms and conditions, the Promoter may, at its sole discretion, reserve the right to exclude you from participating in the Competition.

7.6 Each Entrant indemnifies and holds harmless the Promoter, its associated companies, and the directors, officers, employees and agents of the Promoter and its associated companies, against any and all claims for any loss or damages, whether direct, indirect, consequential or otherwise, arising from any cause whatsoever connected to or arising out of his/her participation in any way in this Competition or his/her receipt, participation, ownership and/or use of a Prize.

7.7 The Promoter reserves the right to hold void, suspend, cancel, or amend the prize competition where it becomes necessary to do so.

7.8 These Terms may be amended by the Promoter on public notice at any time during the Competition Period or thereafter. These Terms will be interpreted by the Promoter only.

7.9 All entries must comply with all applicable laws and regulations.

7.10 These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. If any entrants to this promotion wish to take court proceedings, then they must do this within the courts in the England and Wales.
