I have picked the topic Prisons and Justice systems because I feel strongly about the safety of the public and those around us. Prisons are meant to keep the public safe from the dangerous people of the world, but they are slowly not doing that as inmates are finding sneaky ways to escape the prison which is a risk to the general public’s life. There was reportedly 8 people that broke away from prisons in England in 2022/2023 which is a decrease from 2021/2022 but is still a concerning statistic (from justice/gov.) We have seen Justice Systems making poor decisions on how long people should be in prison for or what their punishments they should serve.

The people who are mainly affected or in danger are the people living near the prison or around it a someone escapes it can be a danger to their life. The safety of prisons is a big part of the world running smoothly as they are the places that hold the bad people of the world that are harmful to the public. Other opinions say that prisons are safe enough and don’t deserve any money put into prisons to be safer for everyone. People say this because they think Prisons should be a dull and boring place because it is a punishment for them. Public opinions on Justice systems could be that they are being to soft on serial offenders. There is a back log in the court system where trials aren’t being heard for 2-3 years(source a detective constable for the BTP)

I think the security in prisons needs to be looked at because it is very easy for inmates to get Drugs and mobile phone and also other contraband into the Prison. “There are problems of prison suicides, rising violence and drug abuse behind bars. Crime is often caused by drug or drink problems, by poor mental health, or through abuse and neglect at an early age. The public deserves a justice system that tackles these underlying causes of crime and invests in prevention.” I really agree with this statement from Howardleague.com as it shows how people are worried about their safety and the safety of the inmates in prison.
